Gas line rupture forces evacuation of Star-News
PASADENA - The Pasadena Star-News and several businesses in the 900 block of Colorado Boulevard were evacuated at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday after a severed gas line spewed toxic fumes into the street.The Gas Company capped the plastic line, stopping the flow of gas at 1:30 p.m. Workers and patrons of the businesses in affected block were allowed back in the evacuated buildings.
The gas line was punctured by work crews digging deep into the sidewalk in front of Lovebirds Café and Bakery on Colorado Boulevard. Patrons at the eatery were forced to abruptly end their lunch and spill out into the street as the fumes grew stronger.
The broken gas line costs Lovebirds Cafe more an estimated $10,000, according to owner John Jomehri.
"We had to cancel a number of catering appointments. A lot of customers came in and left and we had to reimburse our customers with a free sandwich," he said. "We had our ovens full of bread, all of those breads are lost."
Jomehri said the gas fumes didn't sicken any of his employees.
