Wade Phillips eyes free agency for Texans secondary help

The Texans need secondary help. Wade Phillips, the Texans’ new defensive coordinator, expects that need to be addressed during free agency.

"From what I know and what we’ve talked about (internally), I think we’ll be active in free agency, especially as far as the secondary (goes)," Phillips told Vic Carucci of NFL.com on Sirius XM NFL Radio. "But there may be other priorities, maybe even offensive priorities.

"We’re really young in the secondary overall, and that’s more worrisome than anything else. I think we have some good talent, although I haven’t had the players (for workouts) to know exactly what we have. I’m going on what the other coaches say and what we’ve seen on tape."

The Texans will have a difficult time making the playoffs for the first time unless their defense, ranked 30th overall last season, improves significantly. That is why Phillips was brought in.

However, it will be interesting to see what the Texans do in free agency once the lockout is lifted. Will they go hard after one of the top free agent corners like Nnamdi Asomugha, Ike Taylor or Antonio Cromartie?

Regardless of the Texans’ approach to free agency, Phillips must find a way to solidify a defense that surrendered at least 30 points in half of its games.
