Beach-Style Furniture Adds Suburban Shore Look Outside Birmingham Bar

Birmingham's nearest thing to a resort scene is open for its first season in the sun and under the stars.

There's no sand, surf or swimwear, though recliners with cushions and pillows add a beach-like feel to The Corner 's patio on Merrill Street. Two new sets of sectional loungers let couples and small groups slip back, kick off footwear and try to imagine they're not on a suburban sidewalk.

"This seems like vacation," Trish Buckley said the evening of June 3 as she joined two friends under a clamshell-shaped canopy. "I feel like I should be in Cancun."

May Russell of Milford, sharing the sofa, was reminded of Lincoln Road in South Beach — pedestrian-only blocks of restaurants, bars and shops in Miami Beach. "It's so cool, I love it," she commented.    

In addition to the six-foot-wide main unit, each sofa-like Baleares set has three curved side seats and an ottoman where servers place menus and trays with drinks or light fare from the Townsend Hotel .

The brown and cream furniture arrived early this month, replacing three metal café tables and chairs. Flip-flops and tropical shirts suddenly seem more appropriate at The Corner.

Loungers can't be reserved, and those who snag them can stay as long as they keep ordering. "If they're not just getting water, they can have them all night," manager Jad Habayeb explained. "This is perfect for our style of service, which doesn't involve full meals."

Monique Hermoz and Randy Nafso of West Bloomfield, cocooned under a canopy, were among first-week users. The eye-catching loungers grabbed their attention as they walked past. "That's why we came here," she said. "These make me think of cabanas at a resort."

The back-to-back arched canopies are an eye-catching people magnet, particularly because they're near a busy intersection and the Pierce Street Parking Structure . "Lots of people have been stopping to look, even drivers," server Whitney Gootte noted.      

"I can't wait to try them! I'm sure they'll be very popular this summer," Cindy La Ferle of Royal Oak commented under a preview article in Patch.

After a round or two of beverages, with a gentle June breeze, guests may be able to shut their eyes and imagine the soft sound of ... truthfully, just rustling trees and passing traffic. But they'll lounge in comfort, at least.
