Cocalico senior creates PSA about depression

Walking down a high school hallway in a banana costume might seem a strange way to spread the word about teen depression and suicide.

But that's the idea, said Cocalico High School senior Nicole Pilkerton, who crafted a public service announcement for Aevidum, a student-helmed multimedia awareness group that started small at the Denver-based school but is growing fast, state- and nationwide.

With suicide the third-leading cause of death among young people ages 15-24, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it's a problem that can't be ignored, but one that's not easily addressed.

Enter that costume.

In the 15-second spot, which Pilkerton, 18, said she hopes to see airing soon on television stations in the New York and Philadelphia areas, a young man walks down a crowded hall dressed as a giant banana. Students stare, flash sideways glances or just go about their business. The tagline: "Depression doesn't always stick out."

"It would be easier if you could just pick it out," said Pilkerton, of Denver. Somebody might be suffering, but classmates, friends or even family can't always see it. And in some cases, they don't know until it's too late.

Pilkerton, who will be heading to the Center for Creative Media, near Tyler, Texas, in the fall, said Aevidum is a word with Latin roots. It's not a "real" word, but the term, pronounced "ah-veed-um," means "I've got your back," Pilkerton explained.

Eight students were originally involved in what started as a group called A Helping Hand. It was founded in 2004 after the 2003 suicide of Cocalico student Phil Cardin.

One past president was Maggie Cardin, Phil Cardin's sister, who was a sixth-grade student when her brother died. On Aevidum's website, aevidum.org , she talks candidly about Phil's death, and why such tragedies are preventable.

None of the founders considered themselves experts on depression or suicide. But today, involved students such as Pilkerton use their talents to spread the message, be it by song, art, stories or videos such as the one crafted by Pilkerton.

It's the latest step in the series of strides Aevidum has made since its founding.

The group has gained a foothold in 16 Lancaster-area schools, said Aevidum Executive Director Joe Vulopas, who's also an English teacher at Cocalico.
