If there was a bottle opener on this thing, I’d be perfect, and I can understand how one of these in the pocket reduces the need for crucial things like instruction, maps and adequate living space. A smart phone can somehow become the portable go-to item to answer a plethora of questions. It stores stuff better than a closet or a car trunk. Your record collection is suddenly smaller than a pack of cigarettes. Instead of wondering, you look things up, on the spot, and you are better for it. I have long understood that young people can make their computers as important to their lives as their grandparents did Grateful Dead albums. While I arrived late in the game, and the computer lifestyle arrived relatively late in my own game, dependence on a computer has turned into a gateway to learning and understanding that never opened for me in school. Hit a button to learn the latest from Wall Street, hit another to explain Wall Street. Up-to-date sports information (sorry, Ed Kilgore, but it’s been months since you informed me of something important that I hadn’t learned hours earlier). The think-tank reports that are available by the hundreds of pages, scrolling out on the tiny screen, before Wolf Blitzer comments on their relevance. Opinions and conspiracy theories galore. If I have a sudden need to hear the soothing voice of Smokey Robinson, he’s there. Oooo, baby baby. What I only lately comprehend is the advantage of carrying a conveniently sized and Internet-ready computer around with me (it makes and takes telephone calls, too). The portable version of anything, historically, has tended to revolutionize outlooks and possibilities — hand-held radios, “pocket” paperback books and fold-up baby strollers, for example. Once, while working in a factory, I brought in a standard-issue almanac to prove a point made the day before, and a friend there, smart if not book-smart, was fascinated by it. He had never known that a one-volume compendium of knowledge, one category after another of statistics, facts and paragraph-long explanations of things like Islam, burn treatment and the Federal Reserve System, existed. So he bought a copy for himself. An entire layer of society, the one that both serves my interests and complicates them, is obsoleted by this (and if a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, people, I am a dangerous man).
