Cap shingles for ridges and hips may be cut from standard cedar roofing shingles, or cut from manufactured cap shingles. If the over- lapped part is cut on a slight taper, it will give a neater appearance. The ridge and hip caps are installed with the same exposure as the shingles. Each is nailed with two nails which are covered by the next shingle. Some contractors put a small spot of asphalt roofing cement under the tab of each cap. Do not put too much or it may cause a bulge. When the ridge is on a hip roof, the end has a cap made by cutting and folding a shingle.
Trim back the roof decking a distance specified by the manufacturer of the ridge vent. Then lay and nail the ridge as specified. Finally, nail the ridge-cap shingles over the vent in much the same way as described for a closed ridge.
