In fact, I hate The Butterfly Effect so much that I’ll be yelling at people about it this very night at the Toronto Underground Cinema, where it’s the latest title in the ongoing Defending The Indefensible series. Adam Nayman, an otherwise decent fellow who writes for Metro and Cinema Scope, among other publications, will be offering the defense. I will be there to stop him at all costs. Pay eight bucks, and you get to watch. The Underground’s screening isn’t the weekend’s only charitable cinematic event, mind you. Saturday (June 25) sees the return of the Rainbow Cinemas Midnight Movie Marathon, a five-film red-eye experience to raise money for The Toronto Star Fresh Air Fund . This year, four different locations across the GTA will host the marathon, each with a different program of five films. The first four are announced in advance; the fifth and final title is a surprise. This year’s theme is Dancing In The Dark, assembling musicals and music-oriented features. In honour of Pride Week, it’s opening with a double-bill of Jennie Livingston’s 1990 drag-queen documentary Paris Is Burning and John Waters’s 1988 Hairspray, starring actual drag queen Divine. And mass slaughter…in an instant, the riverbank is turned into a gruesome sea of blood. The main character Gang-du is a man who passes tedious days operating a snack bar next to the river. On that day of great destruction, he witnesses his one and only daughter eaten up by the creature right before his eyes.
The sudden appearance unforeseen and unexpected circumstances renders the government and state powerless to act… And the once-ordinary citizen Gang-du and his family are thrust into a battle with the monster to rescue Hyun-seo. On the banks of the river, which are completely closed off by the government and declared a danger zone, Gang-du and his family rush into an unstoppable showdown with the monster.
