Fights rumbling into Lake George Forum

QUEENSBURY -- Dave Archambault has been planning for Saturday night for a long time.

It’s been two years since the Queensbury-based boxing coach and promoter held a show in the Glens Falls area, and now he’s hosting a major amateur event featuring a variety of boxing and martial arts at the Lake George Forum.

Set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Fights at the Forum brings together fighters from several disciplines — boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Thai and San Da rules boxing — to the Forum for a planned 26-fight card.

"It’s 100 percent amateurs trying to get their skill levels up to hopefully move up and fight in the pros," Archambault said.

Archambault, who trains boxers and kickboxers at Iron Fist MMA in Queensbury and in his garage in Fort Edward, said he’d like to bring more of these fighting events to the area.

"I think the area’s been starved for it," said Archambault, who promoted the area’s last fight night, the Back to School Brawl at the Queensbury VFW in 2009. "I’ve been putting on these shows for 12 years. I’ve put on six in Saratoga... Now that we’ve got the (Iron Fist) gym going, I want to bring it back up to Glens Falls.

"If all goes well, I’ll do a few shows a year up there (at the Lake George Forum), or at the Civic Center. I’d rather do it up here since I’m from the area."

Fights at the Forum is not a mixed martial arts event. New York state currently bans MMA competitions, so Fights at the Forum by law cannot be MMA, which mixes elements of those styles. The latest effort to lift the ban on MMA in New York failed in the legislature this week.

So Saturday’s fights are the next-best thing — a card of fights to display the different styles that make up MMA. Fights at the Forum is sanctioned by the U.S. Muay Thai Association, the national kickboxing organization.

"It’s an amateur event as close to MMA as you can get in New York state," Archambault said of Saturday’s event. "It’s different from MMA — there’s no ‘ground and pound,’ no stand up-to-ground fighting like there is in MMA."

Thai boxing, or Muay Thai, is a form of combat fighting that adds knees, feet and elbows, as well as clinches (stand-up grappling), to the traditional fist-striking of boxing.

Do you really think it has practical applications against a guy much bigger and stronger than you can you invision that? Do you think the foward pressure would still work or do you think you would look retarded before you got Knocked the Fuck out? Have you ever been in a fight?

Yes it has some merit against an untrained attacker of simlar size who you get on the back pedal. But your better off with techniques that work in a wider range of senarios and opponents! Thats a little unfair, not every punch in the UFC is a high quality boxing punch, look at Chuck liddel, anderson Silva & Lyoto. They hav all had success utilzing a variety of punchs. Sometimes its about gettin there first & fast rather than generating max power. Loads of styles & systems can be called ‘battle tested’, when you look at it, most of the MMA staples are actually about power generation & fitting within the rule set, they arent necessarily the best and only way.
