Summer Notebook: Szczur Selected to Play in MLB Futures Game
VILLANOVA, Pa. - After a first half of the season in which he batted .327 and was a midseason All-Star former Villanova outfielder Matt Szczur has been named to the roster for the 2011 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game. The contest which pits Team USA against The World, will take place on Sunday, July 10 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona to kick off the MLB All-Star festivities. The contest will be televised live on ESPN2 and MLB.com at 6:00 Eastern Time on July 10.
Szczur has played the entire season to this point with the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League, a Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Earlier this week Szczur was the starting right fielder for the West Division in the league's All-Star Game.
During the first half of the season Szczur was the Chiefs leadoff hitter in all 51 games he started and batted .327 with a .383 on-base percentage and a .463 slugging percentage. To date he has scored 46 runs and driven in 24 while totaling 12 doubles, one triple and five home runs. Szczur also has 16 stolen bases and has struck out just 20 times in nearly 250 plate appearances.
Szczur begins the second half of the season tonight as the second-leading hitter in the Midwest League, trailing only his own teammate, Greg Rohan, by two points. He also ranks third in the league in runs scored and is in the top-10 for both on-base percentage and stolen bases.
When he plays in the MLB Futures Game on July 10 Szczur will be the second former Wildcat to appear in the contest since its inception in 1999. Back in 2007, right-handed pitcher Kevin Mulvey was chosen for the Team USA squad and appeared as a reliever in the game. Mulvey, then in the New York Mets organization, was also selected for the game after being a midseason All-Star in his league. He pitched most of the 2007 season for the Double A Binghamton Mets and was the starting pitcher in the league's All-Star Game.
McMyne and Francisco Both Make Professional Debut
The two most recent players to ascend from Villanova to the professional ranks both made their debuts last night for their respective teams. Right-handed pitcher Kyle McMyne was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft earlier this month, while left-handed pitcher Mike Francisco was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 47th round.
