Brothers Chris, Cory Marek say being on the same team has 'been a blast'
By Luke Hagen, The Daily Republic, Mitchell, S.D.June 24--ALEXANDRIA -- Brothers Chris and Cory Marek have excelled separately for much of their baseball careers.
Growing up, they each played for the Mitchell high school and Legion teams. But they were never on the same team at the same time.
They also went on to play collegiately at Dakota Wesleyan, but both played for the Tigers during different years.
"We were always apart because there's five years between us," Chris Marek, 28, said.
Although they've followed much of the same baseball paths, their first time playing on the same team wasn't until six years ago, when they joined Salem's amateur baseball team.
Thursday night, the two suited up for Alexandria -- the new amateur team they joined and helped form at the beginning of the season -- in a Sunshine League game against the Mitchell Mad Dogs. Chris started the game on the mound, while Cory was at shortstop. But by the top of the fourth inning, Cory geared up, and was behind the plate doing the catching for his older brother.
"It's relaxing time with your brother," Cory Marek, 23, said. "Playing with your brother, in your favorite sport, it's one of a kind."
Sunday, in a game against Platte held in Alexandria, Chris started on the mound and Cory caught, but it was an offensive oddity that occurred for the first time in their careers together.
For the second time this season, they each hit home runs in the same game, but it was the first time they each hit a long ball in the same inning. Cory hit a two-run homer in the second at-bat of the bottom of the first, and Chris hit a three-run shot three batters later. The early runs led to a 15-5, 7-inning victory.
"We made a few jokes that the older brother always has to do better than the younger brother," said Cory, whose only hit against Platte was the homer, while Chris added an RBI double to go with his long ball. "He hit the bomb a lot further than I did, so he just had to show me up."
Before playing with Alexandria, the pair joined Salem's amateur team in 2006. They played four years with the Salem Cubs before helping start Alexandria's amateur team at the beginning of the year.
The Marek helped the Alexandria Angels moved to 7-1 in Sunshine League action after defeating the Mad Dogs 7-2 Thursday night. Alexandria is 8-2 overall.
Chris and Cory each had two hits in the win. Chris pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters.

Governor, other dignitaries dedicate 'phenomenal' wind project ...
WHITE LAKE — Officials and the public dedicated a $363 million wind project Thursday with a ceremony at the White Lake School.
Due to heavy rains recently, the ceremony was moved from the project site, but it still drew a crowd of about 200.
The 162-megawatt Crow Lake Wind Project will raise Basin Electric Cooperative’s renewableenergy portfolio to more than 700 MW.
“We’re proud of this facility,” said Ron Harper, CEO of Basin Electric. “Again, it becomes a part of our overall resource portfolio, but more important, continues to show our dedication and commitment to respective states that our membership serves in.”
The wind project is comprised of 108 turbines, 100 of which are owned and operated by PrairieWinds SD1 Inc., a subsidiary of Basin. Seven turbines are owned by local investors who formed the South Dakota Wind Partners. One is owned by Mitchell Technical Institute to enhance its wind turbine technology program.
MTI President Greg Von Wald spoke Thursday about one young man’s path through the program.
Cody Telgrin came from Nebraska in the summer of 2009 to attend MTI. Von Wald met him at Cabela’s, where Telgrin worked.
“Over the next two years, I kind of kept my eye on this young fellow,” Von Wald said. “He gained a tremendous amount of technical knowledge.”
Telgrin worked hard during and after the school day and between tice.
“He had some self-doubts about what it was going to be like at 300 feet,” Von Wald said. “Shortly after that, we took possession of this wind turbine that we’re dedicating here today, and the students started to climb it.”
Telgrin climbed the turbine and felt his self-doubts slip away. Von Wald received several photos from instructors of students climbing the turbine.
“In one of those pictures was a work shifts to gain further knowledge about his chosen profession, Von Wald said. However, when it came to practical application, Telgrin was worried he wouldn’t be able to climb wind turbines without some prac- young man up there, tied off, hard hat on, glasses on, hands on his hips, and just a big smile, and it was Cody Telgrin,” Von Wald said.
Two weeks before graduation this year, Telgrin gained employment with Outland Energy Services in Minnesota as a wind turbine service technician.
“I tell you this story because it illustrates just how important that one wind turbine is to training technicians to do their job,” he said.
