Columbus metro area unemployment rate rises to 9.1 percent in May
The Columbus metro area unemployment rate rose slightly in May, the Georgia Department of Labor reported today.
The rate was 9.1 percent, up from 9 percent in April, and compares to 9 percent in May of last year.
The increase occurred because nearly 300 people jumped into the job market, the department said, with 130 of those actually landing work while the others did not.
The citys jobless rate still is far better than Georgias as a whole, with the state coming in at 9.8 percent in May, the same as in April. That marks the 46th straight month the states rate has been worse than that of the nation, which currently stands at 9.1 percent.
Our states jobless rate has been declining slightly for the past six months, Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a statement issued with the state data. More businesses are slowly beginning to expand their work force, illustrating a gradual increase of confidence in the economy.
There was improvement and worsening in two other key categories for Columbus.
First-time unemployment claims dropped nearly 27 percent in May from the same month a year ago the best performance in the state. There were 899 residents seeking jobless benefits last month, down 330 from a year ago. Macon, Athens, Valdosta, Rome and Dalton all saw increases in initial filings.
On the flip side, the metro areas work force was lower than a year ago, with 1,300 fewer jobs in the market. The citys work force total now is 118,800. Valdosta, Augusta, Hinesville, Atlanta, Rome and Savannah also experienced declines, while Macon was flat.
Statewide, the number of payroll jobs last month was virtually flat from April at just over 3.8 million. But measured against May of last year, there were 28,300 fewer positions available.
Breaking down jobless rates in nearby Georgia counties, Muscogee came in at 8.9 percent, Harris at 6.7 percent, Chattahoochee at 16.3 percent, Troup at 11 percent, Talbot at 7.8 percent and Marion at 9.2 percent.
Alabamas jobless rate, meanwhile, rose from 9.3 percent in April to 9.6 percent in May, according to the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations. The Auburn-Opelika rate jumped from 7.5 percent in April to 8.1 percent in May.
Here are the May unemployment rates for Georgias metro areas:
Albany 10 percent
Athens 7.2 percent
Atlanta 9.
