Review: 'West Side Story' a worthy road show
The revival's director, Arthur Laurents - who wrote the book of the original production and who died last month at 93 - wanted to add authenticity to the show by having the characters who play the Puerto Ricans speak in their native tongue. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the young award-winning writer of "In the Heights," was brought in to translate some of Laurents' dialogue and Steven Sondheim's lyrics. Among the most impressive aspects of the show were the dancers and the choreography by Joey McKneely. While the dance moves were similar to those in the original production (choreographed by Jerome Robbins), they had a modern edge to them and were executed superbly by the ensemble. Also providing a "wow" factor were the impressive lighting and the innovative set design - especially when the stage turned into the setting for a "rumble" between the Jets and the Sharks under a highway overpass. The show's score, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Sondheim, is considered to be one of Broadway's finest with such classics as "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere." The cast did an admirable job executing these numbers, with the strongest vocal performances offered by Ali Ewoldt as Maria, Michelle Aravena, who did a great job in the role of Anita, and Alexandra Frohlinger, who played the tomboy, Anybodys, with just the right amount of spunk and vinegar.
