Carol Cloud Bailey: Morning glories poisonous to cats, dogs

A: The short answers are hibiscus may be toxic to pets and morning glories definitely contain poisonous components. If you suspect or observe your pet eating a possible poisonous plant, take a few seconds to collect a sample of the plant and call either your vet or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at 888-426-4435.Morning glory plants, scientifically known as Ipomoea species do contain toxic alkaloids mostly in the seeds, but other parts also may contain some toxins. The ASPCA lists morning glories as toxic to cats and dogs. Possible poisoning symptoms can include gastrointestinal upset, agitation, tremors, disorientation, ataxia and anorexia. The seeds may cause hallucination or diarrhea.

Hibiscus is another story. The plant we grow in Florida, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis or tropical hibiscus, is not found on most lists of plants poisonous to animals. However, the ASPCA database does include Hibiscus syriacus — also known as Rose-of-Sharon — which is related to the tropical hibiscus. The toxic elements of Rose-of-Sharon are unknown and the symptoms are vague. Again, if your pet exhibits any symptoms, I would call the vet immediately.

Karen doesn't say if the plants grown are indoor or outdoor, but one way to prevent pets from eating house plants — or landscape plants for that matter — is to grow something they can eat. I like to grow a weekly crop of wheat grass. No one is quite sure why some cats or dogs eat grass, but when I provide safe greens indoors, my cats leave other plants alone.

The wheat berries or seeds can be bought at most health food or pet specialty stores. I have grown them as sprouts and simply put them in a dish for the cats or in small pots with soil-free potting soil.

Big Apple Florist FYI: Poisonus Plants for Dogs and Cats | Big ...

You may think that being an NYC florist is all easy breezy smiles all day… and sometimes it is, but don’t be fooled! We are also a group of tough cookies working in and around many dangerous situations.  Between hand delivering wonderfully large and fragile flower arrangements through zooming traffic in the streets of New York and handling sharp tools, cacti and thorn covered rose stems, we are actually susceptible to many injuries! Luckily, we are trained professionals and don’t find ourselves in troublesome situations very often.

Pets, however, aren’t trained professionals. There are many poisonous plants for pets, and they’re a danger that many pet-owners fail to consider – until their pets become sick.

Some common indoor poisonous plants for dogs that you should watch out for: most lily varieties (also toxic for cats), azalea, daffodils, dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane), poinsettia, chrysanthemums, geraniums, begonias, corn plant, golden pothos, rubber plant, and philodendrons.

Many poisonous plants for dogs are also poisonous plants for cats. Here is a list of common plants that can be harmful to your pets provided by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) . You can sort the list according to which pet you have. Just try to make sure to keep these plants and flowers out of reach from your pets!

We here at Big Apple Florist can always help you with any of your floral and plant needs. If you have a pet (like adorable Asher, above!) and would like special consideration for it, just let us know!
