Q: I own a 2001 Chevy Malibu with about 88,000 miles on it. During an oil change the mechanic noticed that a spring had broken on a rear strut. They quoted a price of $900 to replace both rear struts and do a wheel alignment. Does this sound like a fair price for the work involved? Thanks for your help.
A: We have a name for this kind of pricing in the automotive trade. If the work you listed is accurate, the job should cost $583 plus the alignment. The modular struts are $234 each. The labor to pop them in is 1.2 hours or about $115. In desperate times, people do acts of desperation. However, ripping people off has no place in my automotive repair trade. Get your car out of there just as quick as you can.
Q: I am contemplating purchasing a 24-foot travel trailer, but I need a vehicle to tow it. The prices of the new pickup trucks are quite high, so I was hoping to find a late-model used pickup instead. I know when buying a new truck there is an option to purchase a "tow package." I am not sure what a tow package includes. I thought I heard once before it is a beefed-up radiator and transmission. Would I be able to purchase an eight-cylinder, 4WD pickup without the tow package and still expect it to handle the load? If not, is the tow package equipment something I could add to a used pickup? And what might that cost?
A: If I were doing what you plan on doing, I would be looking for a Dodge Ram 250, preferably with the Cummings Diesel. As far as adding a tow package, you could start with a thicker radiator, a transmission cooler, oil cooler, heavier springs, heavier duty shocks, and possibly even a torque converter. You could probably set up a Dodge 250 with a radiator, trans cooler, oil cooler and some new shocks for around $1,200 or less. The torque converter would be optional depending what the truck currently has in it.

They pull up the oem/factory alignment specs for the car at Brake Check. at least that's what i remember. and besides, if you are just getting a general alignment, it'll be the same routine everywhere you go. they will try to zero out the toe, but they wont do much for the caster or camber. my guess is that they will do the same at the honda dealership as well, but you could give it a shot.
