Cape board bids farewell to Robinson

LEWES -- After serving a year as interim superintendent, Dr. David Robinson is ready to set off into the sunset of retirement.

Recently hired Superintendent Kevin Carson is slated to take over the role on June 27. Carson was hired by the school board in early April, but he had to fulfill his obligations to Woodbridge School District, where he held the same position.

Last May, the school board appointed Robinson to the position on a one-year contract as a search for his eventual replacement was conducted.

"Sometimes you don't have an opportunity to put a capstone on your career, (but) the opportunity I had to come here and serve in the Cape Henlopen School District has put a great capstone on my career," he said.

Robinson had previously worked for 36 years in the Caesar Rodney School District. He grew up and graduated in what is now the Cape district and is planning to spend his retirement here as well.

"It's been a good, wonderful year," Board Vice President Sara Wilkinson said. "I'm happy we had (him) at the helm to move us in the direction we really needed to be going. We were at a crossroads and you took us down the path."

The school board had to quickly fill the superintendent position after George Stone vacated the position near the end of last school year.

Board Member Camilla Conlon thought Robinson did a great job in his short time with the district.

"Stepping in as an interim superintendent is not an easy job," she said. "(He) made Cape better than when (he) arrived and we appreciate that."

As well as heading the district day to day, Robinson also helped with the search for his replacement. And while he was only with the district for a year, he said he will treasure the memories.

"This is a year that I will cherish as much as maybe the 36 years I spent with my previous employer because it's the community I grew up in and because of working with the great people in the district," he said. "You can't lead unless you have someone to lead. The administrators in this district are a wonderful group of people who are committed to our students.

Delaware students to compete at National Technology Student ...

Nearly 70 students and educators from across the state will represent Delaware at the National Technology Student Association Conference due to their outstanding performance  at the State TSA conference.

The students will demonstrate their skills in hands-on, minds-on competitions against nearly 4,000 other participants from throughout the United States.

The National TSA Conference is scheduled to be held from June 21 to June 25 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Dallas, Texas.

Delaware's student members are preparing to compete in up to 60 competitive events based on principles and concepts learned through projects during the school year in related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, Delaware Department of Education spokeswoman Alison Kepner said. The conference will recognize the technological future of the nation with the theme "Snapshot of Innovation."

Students will represent Delaware in a variety of events, such as CAD, Construction Renovation, Video Game Design, Dragster Design, Engineering Design, Flight Endurance, Photographic Technology, Robotics, Transportation Modeling and more. Attendees from Delaware will also participate in special leadership sessions, designed to develop and enhance their skills through customized sessions for middle and high school students and teachers, graduating seniors and chapter and state TSA officers. Other special interest sessions will be presented by industry representatives and educators.

The first of four general sessions will be held on Wednesday, June 22 and will open the conference with a "Parade of State Flags" ceremony and a keynote address given by Cameron Evans, National and Chief Technology Officer of the Microsoft Corporation. TSA partners with The American Cancer Society (ACS) for its national service project, and conference attendees will take part in the TSA/ACS Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back commemorative event. Chapters and states will be recognized for their ACS fundraising efforts throughout the year.
