Friday's Sports In Brief

With training camps set to open in another month, NFL owners and players will resume negotiations next week, hoping to build on recent talks, two people familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press on Friday.

While each side has acknowledged progress in the 4-month-old lockout, a new collective bargaining agreement isn’t imminent. One of the two people who spoke on condition of anonymity said conference calls are being set up to discuss various issues, but not the major one of splitting revenues.

The person said that was being negotiated “face to face.”

The two people declined to be identified because the meetings were confidential.

The sides completed two days of talks at a beachfront resort in Hull, Mass., on Thursday. On hand were NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, owners John Mara of the New York Giants, Jerry Richardson of the Carolina Panthers, Clark Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs, Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots and Dean Spanos of the San Diego Chargers.

NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith also was present along with several players, including Jeff Saturday of the Indianapolis Colts, Tony Richardson of the New York Jets and Domonique Foxworth of the Baltimore Ravens.

NEW YORK — With their turn, the players passed.

NBA players declined to present a new economic proposal to owners Friday, less than a week before the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement.

Dressed in matching T-shirts urging solidarity, about 40 players attended the negotiating session, the final one before owners could vote on whether to lock them out if no deal is reached. But once there, they decided not to make any move to close the distance between the sides’ financial positions.

The sides aren’t scheduled to meet again until Wednesday or Thursday, hours before the June 30 expiration date.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Ryan Nugent-Hopkins took center stage when the Edmonton Oilers made him the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft.

It was quite fitting. Center was clearly the coveted position as player after player came off the board.

Nugent-Hopkins was the first to go Friday night, starting a run of pivots with six of the first eight selections. Then came the defensemen, with six being chosen in the top 14.

Edmonton took left wing Taylor Hall No. 1 in 2010, and Nugent-Hopkins could eventually find himself on a line with him.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Winnipeg introduced a new head coach and had the seventh pick in the NHL draft.
