Avoiding ticks

I am now convinced that our dog is just a big tick transport this time of year. While it is warming up and the weather has been wet the ticks are prolific and find their way onto the dog. This unfortunately gives a direct connection for the ticks to come into the home.

To prevent tick bites on people we must be vigilant when the ticks are most active. Avoid wooded and bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.

Try to walk on trails when available and stay to the middle of the trails. Repellents with DEET or Permethrin can be effective in repelling ticks. While DEET can be applied to the skin permethrin should be applied only to clothing. Parents need to read directions on containers and be careful when applying on young children.

To prevent ticks from attaching to the skin try to bath or shower within two hours or as soon as possible when coming indoors. Conduct full-body tick checks using a mirror or parents should check their children. Examine gear and pets just in case a tick decided to catch a ride into your home. Clothing can be placed in a dryer at high heat for an hour to kill remaining ticks.

To reduce the chances that a tick will attach to you or your pets: Check your pets for ticks daily after being outdoors; If you find a tick on your pet remove it right away; Ask your veterinarian to check for ticks when doing an exam and find out what type of tick-borne disease are in your area; Reduce the tick habitat in your yard; and Talk with your veterinarian about using tick preventatives on your pet.

To create a tick-safe zone in your yard: Remove leaf litter; Clear tall grasses and brush around the home and the edges of the lawn; Place a 3 foot wide barrier of wood chips or grave between the lawn and wooded areas to restrict tick migration; Mow the lawn frequently; stack wood neatly and in dry areas; Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees; Discourage unwelcome animals, such as deer, raccoons, and stray dogs - from entering your yard; and Remove old furniture, mattresses, or trash from the yard that may give ticks a place to hide.
