Trash once again burying Naples
ROME, June 24 (UPI) -- The Italian government must intervene to rid Naples of massive amounts of uncollected garbage, President Giorgio Napolitano said Friday.
In a written statement, Napolitano said one possible solution is sending the trash to other countries for disposal, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. He said the trash problem is at an "acute and alarming" level.
"An intervention is absolutely indispensable and urgent," he said.
Local residents have begun protesting by setting fire to garbage and blocking trucks. Firefighters responded to 55 trash blazes overnight.
About 2,400 tons of trash are choking the city and surrounding region.
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told the governor of Campania, Stefano Caldoro, that Italy has agreements with countries that have offered the use of trash disposal facilities.
Uncollected trash is a recurring problem in Naples. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was credited with dealing with the crisis in 2008, but the problem returned in 2010.
