Spend 127 hours exploring Moab

This is where Thelma and Louise took their suicide plunge off a cliff that was supposed to be the Grand Canyon . It's where advertisers lowered a '73 Chevy Impala onto towering Castle Rock for a still-iconic TV commercial. The original Marlboro Man rode in this otherworldly red rock landscape of mesas and buttes. So did John Wayne .

Shades of the untamed West still radiate, from the motel clerk who introduces herself as a fourth-generation Moabite and proudly notes that her grandpa was an outlaw, to the Wanted (dead or alive) fliers around town seeking an attempted murderer with knowledge of the back country.

And then there's the whole 127 Hours thing. The horrible ordeal of hiker Aron Ralston , forced to amputate his own arm after being trapped for five days in a remote slot canyon, was popularized by Ralston's book, Between a Rock and a Hard Place , and the subsequent Academy Award-nominated movie 127 Hours.

Utah tourism honchos are confident the movie has — and will — attract more visitors than it repels. They created 127-hour itineraries statewide to hype the movie's release in November. But it's this rugged region in which the calamity occurred and where the movie was shot, that is most likely to benefit.

The movie is what has brought Virginie Simoneau to the precipice of a 120-foot cliff in the Sand Flats Recreation Area east of town.

"I had no idea this place existed," the Montreal resident says minutes later, gazing up at a spectacular sandstone natural bridge that borders the cliff she has just rappelled down.

Like Simoneau, New York attorney Ashley Garman and her friend, Ellen McGlinchey, have come for a taste of western-style adventure. They're getting mouthfuls. Yesterday, their raft capsized in Class V rapids, an event Garman declares the "scariest thing I've ever experienced." Today's rappelling expedition, whose liability waiver required listing her insurance carrier, also ranks up there.

Just west of downtown at a rocky area called the Ice Cream Parlor (one of Moab's gentler monikers), Tami Cunningham of Parker, Colo., and her daughter, Ali, 14, are learning to rock climb. They're repeat visitors to the area.

"Some people go to Disney. We come here," says Tami Cunningham. "This is Mother Nature's Disneyland.
