MSU excited to host concert

The university and surrounding areas continue to prepare for the arrival of Irish rock band U2 on Sunday, university officials said today.

The band will play at 7 p.m. Sunday night at Spartan Stadium as part of their 360° Tour.

“The university community is excited to host such a high-profile and successful tour,” university spokesman Kent Cassella said. “We’ve got a great venue in Spartan Stadium and it’ll be great to show it and the rest of campus and the East Lansing community off to visitors here for the concert.”

Cassella said planning for the show — which will feature a stage rising more than 150 feet from the stadium’s floor — has been extensive, but it has gone successfully.

“We’ve got a great team of people from all across campus who know how to do this,” Cassella said. “When you combine experts at Spartan Stadium with Wharton Center and Breslin Center, we know how to do a big event.”

Cassella said while visitors are welcome to tailgate prior to the show, no alcohol is allowed on the venue’s grounds or within campus boundaries.

Although the tour is expected to bring several thousand visitors to the stadium and the East Lansing community, construction officials with several projects have adapted accordingly, said Bob Nestle, university engineer.

Nestle said developers were aware far in advance of the tour’s arrival and have adjusted their projects to deal with the demands on the area surrounding the stadium.

Work on a steam tunnel project running from Shaw Lane to the stadium previously was completed prior to preparations for the concert, Nestle said.

The ongoing demolition of the Smokestack — which is slated to finish in mid-August — was suspended for the week leading up to the show, officials said.

“Obviously, it was known the concert was going to be here — we knew the concert was coming for a long time,” Nestle said.

Some students eagerly were anticipating the show.

“It’s exciting,” advertising junior Marie Bodnar said. “It’s all over the radio. I’ve seen billboards, I’ve heard students talking about it.
