When 21-year-old William Yoder pulled his buggy pulled up to a restaurant in Milroy, Indiana, the designated meeting place for the planned encounter, he was met by an undercover agent and taken into custody without incident.His intended victim had alerted her parents to the ongoing texts with Yoder, and they helped police set up the sting.
Yoder confessed that he had sent video messages, naked pictures of himself and lewd messages to the young girl and handed his phone over to Indiana State Police. The state's forensic examination revealed 600 text messages, six picture messages and two video messages exchanged between the girl and Yoder.
Amish communities, in general, refrain from using modern technology like electricity, cars, televisions, and computers, but there is some variation to how strictly rules are enforced.
Many do allow for telephones, and by extension cell phones, to keep in contact and do business with the outside world, but they charge them away from homes -- in barns or at workplaces -- in a kind of barrier to keep the home setting intact.
An Amish using a phone may be surprising to some, but recent reports revealed they're also increasingly using Facebook on phones, too.
The portability of mobile devices makes them an easy choice, since they can be taken to a private location and used without the knowledge and, in this case, disapproval, of fellow community members.
And just like mainstream American communities, the Amish struggle with the convenience and security of mobile technology, and the controversy and dangers it also has to invite.
