LIQUID LENSES FOR CAMERA PHONES ON THE WAY—06/08/11 Hamid Farzaneh, the chief executive officer of Varioptic and head of the new liquid lens firm Optilux, has obtained an exclusive license to utilize proven liquid lens technology in the consumer market. Liquid lenses use a refractive liquid and a conductive liquid that touches small electrodes. When current is applied, the surface tension between the two liquid alters the shape of the refractive substance and creates optical characteristics of a lens. Varioptic plans to ship 100,000 lenses per month for use in camera phones and other consumer products.
