Marine Corps drill team awes Hampton crowd
HAMPTON — You could hear a pin drop as the crowd that filled the Winnacunnet High School athletic field bleachers Wednesday watched a performance of the world-renowned U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. No one moved during the 25-minute performance despite a steadily falling drizzle.
U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Officers' Training Corps Maj. Mike Petruzziello, who runs the program at the local high school, said it was very unusual for the platoon to perform at a venue such as Winnacunnet. The group normally presents programs for visiting dignitaries and heads of state, as well as at Marine Corps barracks shows in Washington, D.C.
"This doesn't usually happen in a small, New England town," the major said. "It is a reunion."
The visit to Hampton happened as a result of what Petruzziello called "the bond between two of our combat heroes."
While serving in his fourth tour of duty in Iraq, Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Daniel Strong was severely wounded when his gun truck exploded. He was the only survivor, Petruzziello said.
The call went out for help, and Staff Sgt. James Woolford and his men, who were operating 10 miles away, responded. Woolford's group supplied aid and protection while Strong was evacuated.
After many months in the hospital, Strong was released and honorably discharged. He has just completed his first year as the instructor for the Winnacunnet USMC ROTC group.
Woolford made it home safely and was appointed to lead the prestigious Silent Drill Platoon. The two met up again Wednesday during the performance and embraced in front of the large and appreciative crowd.
The platoon was formed in 1948 for a one-time show, but was such a favorite that it stayed together to perform. The group is known for its stylized drills using 10.7-pound M1 rifles with fixed bayonets. The drills are performed without auditory cues.
After about 25 minutes of coordinated rifle twirling, spinning and tosses, the public was invited to meet and speak with the team members. The young men appeared to be honored to perform as members of the elite platoon.
"I have two brothers serving in the Marine Corps who have been deployed, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps, but got chosen for something higher," said Lance Cpl. Andrew Wingate of Baltimore, Md. "We represent everything the Marines are about.
