Reviewing the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country

In Sunday’s Automobiles section, Cheryl Jensen reviews the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country , which Chrysler historically has positioned as the choice of the luxury-minded minivan buyer. As Ms. Jensen notes, however, the automaker’s upmarket aspirations have not always translated to the final product.

Yet the 2011 model, which Chrysler says has been “significantly re-engineered,” offers its share of niceties:

For those of us living in colder climates, heated front seats are hard to beat. But the Town & Country test van topped that with a heated steering wheel and heated second-row seats, which could result in arguments among siblings about who will be relegated to the frozen reaches of the third row.

The interior appointments of Chrysler’s previous vans didn’t measure up to the competition, but that has finally changed. The test model’s cabin was every bit as handsome and practical as those of the Odyssey or Toyota Sienna.

The new platform will also allow Chrysler to narrow the minivan's track, which helps attract European buyers. The fate of Stow 'n Go seating, the feature whose packaging requirements is understood to have killed all-wheel drive back in 2004, remains to be seen. Though the new models were scheduled to arrive in 2014, Marchionne has apparently also pushed up the timetable for their release, and they will likely surface in 2013. New Shimmer

They could have all-wheel-drive and sto-n-go if the rear wheels are powered by electric motors. I have a Dodge Grand Caravan with sto-n-go, and I hardly ever stow the second row seats. Here's my open letter to Chrysler. Build a van with non-stowing second-row seats. Keep the wells, but put Li-on batteries in 80% of the well-space (keep 20% for nicknack storage). Send the battery power to motors on the rear wheels, thereby offering hybrid abiility and limited AWD at a reasonable price. If you can make 30-30 EPA, you'll have a winner on your hands.

Autoblog Podcast #235

Episode #235 sends Chris, Dan and Zach off on topics like the official pricing for the Chevrolet Sonic, Factory Five's crowdsourced car design contest, the Coral Gables, FL ban on parking pickups overnight in driveways and the 2012 BMW M5. Weaving it all together are tangents aplenty as we respond to the feedback of our live listeners and deal with Zach's cranky Skype connection. The Q&A Module is also fertile ground for feedback, and that's how we close out the show. We're having lots of fun with the live podcasts, and your feedback is welcome as we refine the experience. Check it out to hear how it went down live, and you can catch it as it happens next week at our UStream channel , as well as the traditional ways we've always offered.
