JH Kwabena Nketia - Portrait of a young man at 90
Professor J. H. Kwabena Nketia is one of the very few Ghanaians today who qualify to be called living legends. At 90 years this week, Prof. Nketia the teacher, musician, composer and writer is easily the most published and best known authority on African music and aesthetics in the world. He is also the youngest.At 90, Prof Nketia can still make time to sit with young people whenever he has been approached and share his thoughts. He still has a spark in his eyes when he is talking about music, poetry, or just life as it was lived in the good old days.
Despite his huge stature and wealth of knowledge, he does not appear intimidating, as the panelists on last Saturdays Entertainment Review programme on Peace FM would attest to as perhaps the latest group of young people to engage him in a chat. He even performed a piece of rap poetry he wrote long before any of them was born.
This is the man who is known by many as The Moses of African music. Some of his students call him a Living library, while others call him The Grandfather of African Music!
In Ghana, Prof. Nketia has been well acknowledged by academia, government and showbiz. In that respect, he has been honoured with several home grown awards such as Companion of the Order of Star of Ghana, Grand Medal of the Government of Ghana (Civil Division); and a DLitt (Honoris Causa) of tile University of Ghana, Ghana Book Award, ECRAG Special Honour Award (1987), Ghana Gospel Music Special Award (2003), and ACRAG Flagstar Award (1993).
At the international level, various published sources including the internet, proclaim Prof. Nketia as winner of the Cowell Award of the Africa Music Society, ASCAP deems Taylor Award for his book on the Music of Africa, IMC-UNESCO Music Prize for Distinguished Service to Music, Prince Claus 1997 Award for Distinguished Service to Culture & Development and in the year 2000 Distinguished Africanist Award of the African Studies Association of the USA for Life-long Devotion to African Studies.
He has served as Professor of Music at UCLA University of Pittsburgh, and has lectured in many top universities in the US, Europe, Africa and Asia, including the University of Michigan, Harvard, Stanford, Indiana, City University of London, and the China Conservatory of Music.

Go-Go with Jesus | After The Music Stops
There are many different ways to engage students and one such way is through music. In Washington, DC there is a certain type of music called Go-Go music that is unique to this area; Go-Go’s are very popular in the DC community as there are hundreds and sometimes thousands of people in attendance at these events. As a result there are also Gospel Go-Go’s which have the same feel of the normal Go-Go’s but there is a message behind the music, with the groups having Christ “centered” lyrics; many of these Gospel Go-Go’s happen in Churches or are sponsored by Churches and youth ministries. A friend of mine Min. Akil Dickens recently had a Gospel Go-Go on New Year’s Eve where hundred’s of students were in attendance and many were saved. Here is a summary of the event:
On New Year’s Eve the Youth Ministry of Ebenezer AME Church celebrated what God did in 2010 by having a Praise Party with local groups and examining the Isaiah 43:18 scripture. The Gospel was preached 5 minutes prior to the new year and as the countdown began for a new year the students praised God and celebrated all that God has done. Then 5 minutes into the new year another message was preached looking at Isaiah 43:19. The highlight of the night was having one of the most well known “secular” Go Go Bands to play their music. The TCB Band played that night and hundreds of saved students came out to the event. We invited the TCB Band (secular Go-Go Band) and challenged them to play a clean set with NO explicit lyrics, nothing negative, or sexual. They agreed and most of the members of this band grew up in the church and some of them are still very active in their local church. The Lord blessed and as a result 34 students were saved and one of the band members dedicated his life back to Jesus Christ.
Here are some questions I asked Min. Akil:
Rev. Russ: What was the planning like for this event? How did you and your team go about getting all the bands together? And how did you all decide to pull in a non-gospel Go-Go band?
Min. Akil : The planning was really all about hearing from God and being lead by Him; we weren’t trying to be deep or anything, but when we observe this movement called Gospel Go-Go, we see it as being an alternative to allow young folks the opportunity to be saved and develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. I see these events as being catered towards the needs of these students but not sincerely uplifting them spiritually. While some young folks are not being saved at these events, I must say that they are being reached and encouraged to continue to develop their personal walk with Jesus Christ.
