Deadwood bars, casinos battle underage poseurs
The Old Style Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood is by design a place to let loose and relive some of the vices that made the city notorious and famous.
All that rip-roaring fun, however, tends to attract a young crowd - sometimes, too young.
"It seems like it's getting worse; it's become more and more frequent," said Dan Waisanen, head of security at Saloon No. 10, which deploys a team of "guard dogs" to nab underage customers. Each confiscated ID card also carries a $50 bounty.
Last weekend, they caught six underage patrons.
The popular bar faced a disciplinary panel with the South Dakota Commission on Gaming this month for not catching a 19-year-old who entered a card game in March. When he attempted to trick casino staffers a second time in the same day, he was caught.
Louie Lalonde, general manager of the gaming facility, said she is fed up with the swell of young people attempting to get into the bar. She ultimately paid a $250 fine for the lapse that was self-reported but could have lost the bar's all-important gaming license. The worker was also fined $50.
"It's an important message to get out that we won't tolerate underagers," Lalonde said. "We as business owners need to protect ourselves, given all the liability involved. Although everyone has checked IDs, the staff is not all professionally trained on what to look for."
While writing an appeal to the gaming commission, Lalonde said she decided it was time to make a stand. This week, she invited Detective Greg Nelson from the Deadwood Police Department to lead all 96 staffers on a crash course for ID checking.
"You're in a dark bar, you're in a hurry, it's chaotic and loud. You check to the date, glance at the face and usually let them through if it checks out," Nelson said. But due to states developing hologram and black-light technology, many underage patrons have forgone the fake ID market and turned to a relative or friend with a similar resemblance.
In most cases, a group consists of several people older than 21 and a single youngster that attempts to slip past security, Nelson said.
All six underager customers caught last weekend at the bar held authentic identification cards; they just belonged to another person who was of age. When arrested, most customers have several other casino hand stamps, showing a trail of other successful entries, Waisanen said.
"You have to look at their eyes, nose, throat, check how tall, how much they weigh," said Waisanen, adding that he once caught someone based on the size of their adam's apple. "Hair and clothing changes, but facial features don't lie.

Checking for Fake ID’s Is Easier Than You Think
When it comes to checking a persons age to allow them into a bar or club, it is now doubly difficult thanks to super personal printers and scanners.
A good bouncer or doorman need to look for only a few key elements of a license or identification card:
Simply compare the person to the picture on the license . Look for facial features such as eye colour, slant of nose and the easiest – how big the persons eyes are or how close they are together. Height, weight and hair colour change all the time don’t worry about the changeable features.Look for signs of tampering or fuzzy numbers or letters. Key information often tampered with is the picture, birth date, height and weight. Numbers or a state seal may not match up after the faked ID is re-laminated.
Check the expiration date of a license. A drivers license with an expired date is a possible sign that the person it used to belong to gave it to a friend. If you can’t determine if the person pictured is the actual person standing in front of you then using this time tested trick will certainly call their bluff.
Simply ask the person you are checking: “What is your zodiac (horoscope) sign”. If a person is using a friends ID card they may know their birthday but probably don’t know their astrological (birth) sign. For example, someone born in April is an Aries.
