Mount Carmel seeking facelift for pool

The city's Rotary Club is trying to raise funds to get the building adjacent to the pool in better shape.

While the swimming area of the pool is in good shape, the two-story community building that's part of the complex is in need of an overhaul.
"The upstairs doors and windows have to be replaced," said Mount Carmel Mayor Bill Hudson. "Once these upgrades are made, the facility will be available again for class reunions and other community gatherings into the fall and even during mild winters."
The mayor estimates the renovations will cost between $30,000 and $50,000.
Hudson also envisions the pool complex as a gathering place for Mount Carmel Golden Aces football fans after home games.
Until around 1979, the pool remained one of the most popular places in Southern Illinois for weekend dances. The Corvettes, a popular rock band appeared often, drawing crowds from a wide area of the region.
"The bandstand is gone now, and the concession stand was torn out in 1979," Hudson said. "Back then, the pool was open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. You could eat there and have dances, but that was before a lot of television shows and video games."
The pool is a zero-depth pool, meaning you can walk directly into the pool without the use of ladders or steps. The 4-foot section of the pool was renovated in 1976 with all new concrete. After the pool developed a leak in 1996, a liner was added in the 11-foot section.
A large circular fountain in the center of the pool has been removed. It has been replaced with a less ornate, but still functional fountain.
The pool's history goes back to 1934 when the privately owned Mount Carmel Country Club golf course was developed on the former Wild Rose Farm north of town. A short time later, the country club owners entered into an agreement to sell the property, including the nine-hole golf course, to the city.
