Hustlers win 2011 championship

Utilizing a high scoring second half, the Hustlers came from behind and defeated the defending champion Hotrod Honeys 90-56 and win the Texas Rollergirls 2011 championship.  In the opening bout, the Hell Marys also pulled an upset rolling past the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers 71-56. 

The championship game started like it would be a defensive struggle with Molotov M. Pale scoring a 1-0 first jam and giving the Hustlers the first lead.  The Killa Sal Monella added a 4-0 score in the second jam to move the lead out to 5-0 for the team in purple. 

However, the defending champions shut out the Hustlers for the next five jams.  During that 10-0 run, Lucille Brawl, Vicious van GoGo and Bloody Mary each scored three points giving the Hotrod Honeys a 10-5 lead after the seventh jam.

The Hustlers Killa Sal Monella countered with a 5-4 eighth jam, and Molotov M. Pale added a 3-2 tenth jam to narrow the lead to 16-13 in favor of the team in black.  Vicious van GoGo struck back with the first big jam of the bout as the Hustlers jammer headed to the penalty box.  The 10-0 score gave the Honeys a 26-13 lead.

It seemed that the defending champions could begin to pull away, when the team in purple showed how strong a team they are blocking as they closed the Hotrods for the last three jams of the half. Molotov M. Pale scored a 4-0 jam 13th, Killa Sal Monella and the score of a three-point jam to reduce lead the defending champions to 26-20 at the break.

Momentum turned on the first jam of the second half as the jammer Honey was sent to the penalty box and Molotov, M. Pale put up a 17-0 score, much to the delight of the Hustlers fans at the Austin Convention Center, and the team in purple took a 37-26 lead.  Hauss the Boss countered with a 2-0 second jam to narrow the Hustlers lead to 37-28.

Another jammer penalty to the team in black and pink occurred, and The Killa Sal Monella posted a 12-0 jam to stretch out the Hustlers’ lead to 49-28 after the fourth jam.    Chasing Amy added points to the scoreboard with a 7-4 next jam for the Hustlers.  A 4-0 margin by Molotov M. Pale, and a 4-1 jam by The Killa Sal Monella extended the Hustlers lead to 60-32. 

In the ninth jam, another penalty to the Hotrod Honeys jammer caused a scoring opportunity, with The Killa Sal Monella scoring 15 points and moving the lead out to 82-36.  The big lead allowed lead jammer Chasing Amy to continue after a simple pack pass in the next jam and run some clock.  While Bloody Mary caught up with her and passed her, the clock ran the full two minutes of the jam with both skaters scoring eight points to keep the lead the same.

Let me start out by saying that I am a 44 year old man.  My general fitness level is that of someone that needs to pry this comfy couch off of my behind.  Typically my activity level is walking to my truck to drive to work, and walking to my house from my truck after work.  I have 2 very active kids that I have a hard time keeping up with.  I *have* however been the assistant coach on my daughters soccer team for the last 3 seasons.  That at least got me off my bottom and active somewhat for 2-3 hours a week, but nowhere where I should have been.My daughter has decided not to play football this coming season - so there goes my 2-3 hours a week, right? WRONG! This summer, my wife and I were completely out of kitchen remodeling. I do not speak a lick of paint or new flooring. I'm talking about all the destruction to - we tore everything down on the pad. And except for the plumbing, electrical and drywall, we basically did the work ourselves. So I spent at least 400 hours during the 80 days working on this project. Not bum on the couch. A very active .... July 9, 2011 - I shot my first Roller Derby.  You can look at a previous entry on this blog to see some of the images.  I was hooked.  I badgered the league's media liaison for a media pass to the next bout.  Turns out the (a) she is a really cool person, and (b) she likes my work, so she granted it.  Shot my second on July 23rd and will shoot my third on August 27th!  Oh,  She used one of my shots for the poster - totally stoked about that!! My kids have been harassing me to take them skating since they got skates for Christmas.  I feel really badly that I have been putting them off.Decided to get a pair of skates indeed go skating with them. Fast forward to August 10. I contacted the outbreak Rollergirlskates.com (and you should too for all your skate!) And I had a pair of speed skates. Something made me Google Dallas Deception and saw that there was an open practice the next day. Internal power struggle resulted in my scramble to get a helmet, mouth guards, wrist guards and elbow / knee pads. Even after I changed my mind several times until I got my gear, got in my truck and made the trip to the open practice.  Let me stop here and say this - I do not like to get hit.  I never have.
