Wolfram Alpha Brothers Bring Computation to the Document

Conrad is the founder of Wolfram Research Europe Ltd and brother of Stephen, the driving force behind Wolfram Alpha . The brothers were responsible for the Mathematica software, which dominates mathematical and scientific computing. (By way of a nice historical factoid, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, was responsible for its name.)
Mathematica in turn lead to the Wolfram Alpha site, often wrongly described as a search engine when it is in fact a computation engine. If you type in “what it the distance between London and Berlin”, it isn’t retrieving that information from a website, it is calculating it.
Speaking at the Inspire conference in London today, Mr. Wolfram demonstrated their innovative Computable Document Format (CDF). The idea is to bring that sort of computational ability but deliver it in documents, getting away from the view of the world where a PowerPoint presentation, or Word document contains static information—a snapshot of the world at the time the person wrote the document—to a world in which documents have built in tools that allow users to interact with the data and models in real time, changing different variables to see how the model reacts.
That model could be something as simple as seeing the effect of changes of interest rates on mortgage returns, through advanced computational physics such as fluid dynamics.
People make much better decisions if they are given more information
In real life, what does that actually look like. It sort of looks like a Flash tool, with sliders and perhaps a graph. When you tweak values using the sliders, the graph changes. Or in another example there was the spread of an oil slick. Change things like the wind direction and see how the slick changes. If you can express it mathematically, you can model it.
“I am not just talking about pre-formed content like a video—I am talking about something where you are driving new discovery from a landscape set up by the author,” he said.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Europe , he said he saw one of the uses of CDF documents would be to allow senior executives to play with models in a far more interactive way.
“People who make decisions make much better decisions if they are given more information. If you put up a CDF and allow people to drive the model, it is a completely different decision making process. Rather than making decisions on static data, you can do it on a dynamic model.
