NDFB top gun shot dead in Garo Hills encounter

SHILLONG: Security forces gunned down two hardened NDFB militants, including its general secretary Dijen Dhigwara Narjary, during a fierce encounter in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills district on Saturday.

A joint team of Meghalaya Police and the 9 Sikh Light Infantry carried out a raid in Mendipathar around 0115 am and cordoned off Garo Basti village. "On seeing the security forces, the militants fired at them. The securitymen retaliated and killed two militants," an Army source said.

The slain militants were identified as Dijen Dhigwara Narjary, "general secretary" of the NDFB's anti-talks group, and his aide, Bwidha Gawri.

"Acting on a tip-off that a group of militants Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and NDFB militants were taking shelter in Garo Basti near Mendipathar, the security forces launched a manhunt on Friday evening. They spotted the rebels around midnight," a senior Meghalaya police official said.

A heavy exchange of fire was reported in the early hours on Saturday between security forces and the militants. The area is close to the state's border with Assam.

Police said more rebels were hiding in the area, but they managed to flee the spot under the cover of darkness.

After the encounter, security forces found an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, 10 rounds, a 7.62 mm pistol magazine, two Chinese grenades and an IED from the spot. Two radio sets and extortion notes of the anti-talks NDFB were found.

Meghalaya additional director general of police (Law and Order) Rajiv Mehta said, "The two NDFB rebels were involved in the last ambush on a police team which killed three personnel and wounded two. Saturday's operation was part of the ongoing combing operation against GNLA and NDFB militants."

On June 4, NDFB and GNLA militants had laid an ambush near Thapa Darenchi in East Garo Hills district bordering Assam, killing havildar Blein Mukhroh and constables B Sangma and Johnhigbirth K Marak.
