5 questions with Beth Duman, certified dog trainer

Q: How did you start training dogs?

A: I've been training dogs for many, many years. I was attending seminars and working with positive trainers, and I realized that the science of training was not getting through to the general public. I started including dog training information when I took my dogs out in public. And then, of course, to become a certified trainer, I had to have hundreds of hours of training experience. I've attended many, many seminars and spent a lot of time learning things from other people, and then ultimately took the certification test that makes me a certified professional dog trainer.

Q: Tell me about your association with Victoria Stilwell from the Animal Planet series, "It's Me or the Dog."

A: I've met Victoria a few times at dog training conferences. A couple of years ago, she started offering the ability for trainers to become officially associated with her. So if someone contacts me and says, 'How do you train dogs?' I can say,'Have you seen Victoria Stilwell on TV?' And I can say that's the kind of training I do. Because she is very focused on doing positive training, as am I. Our goal is to be her representatives in the community.

Q: And now you've written a book about dog training with Charlie as your inspiration.

A: I wanted to make a book that people could read and be pulled in and not have to study it like a textbook. The one thing with positive training is that you can't go wrong. You can be reasonably sloppy and still end up with a wonderful dog. You don't have to train every day. You don't have to spend hours training your dog. We don't scare, or hurt or suppress. The old training, a dog just shuts down. It looks like it is well-behaved, but he's just given up.

Q: Is there a breed that you would say is not a family dog?

A: I don't want to do any characterization of breeds. People need to look back to see what a breed was used for historically. For example, I have a Belgian Tervuren that's a herding dog and he is a wonderful dog, but he probably runs about four miles a day. I have three acres, fenced for him to run. Now if you put him in a little backyard, he'd go crazy.

Often people will get a dog just because it's big or just because it's cute or just because it fits on their car seat or whatever, and they don't think what the dog was historically bred to do. People will call me and say I have a beagle and he keeps yowling. Well, OK, you have a beagle. Or I have a husky, and he runs away when he gets loose. They're a dog that's bred to want to move over great distances, so don't expect it to stand next to you when you have it outside, and you don't have it on a leash.
