Ed Killer: Inlet snooking vs. boat traffic, be smart
Summertime's sweltering heat is doing more than browning lawns, it's also pushing tempers to the boiling point.
June, July and August are prime months for saltwater fishing. Summer quarry includes dolphin, snapper, wahoo, tarpon and big jack crevalles migrations are along the beaches.
But the worst-kept secret, hands down, are the snook in the inlets.
Every South Florida inlet contains the majority of its area's mature snook population. From May's full moon until September's, the iconic inshore gamefish school in an annual ritual to produce more snook for generations to come.
Their size, numbers and relative ease to catch makes them an angling target too attractive to pass up. For that reason, the state has protected snook in June and July since 1982.
Catch and release is still allowed. Not every snook will survive a catch and release experience, but most will live through a brief photo opportunity. But a recent incident in the shoaling narrow St. Lucie Inlet suggests that one day a snook angler may not.
According to Jensen Beach fishing guide Capt. Brent Bowman, two young snookers recently learned where not to anchor if shooting to catch a snook.
"Fishing nearby I saw two kids anchored in a 22-foot bay boat on the inside of the jetty," said Bowman. "The Lady Stuart (party boat) was on its way out the inlet and got on its hailer to warn the anglers they were anchored in the narrow channel."
Bowman said the party boat attempted to navigate seaward through what is now a very narrow navigable stretch of water parallel to the north side of the detached jetty's rocks. Lady Stuart skipper and owner Capt. David Knight said he had nowhere to go since his vessel's path only has about five feet of clearance on either side of the channel's center. On his starboard were the rocks, on his port the edge of hard sandy sandy shoal.
"Their anchor was on the rock side of the channel and their boat was in the channel," said Knight who was carrying 25 passengers that day. "Their line was taut straight across the channel."
Knight did the only thing he could do to avoid wrapping their line in his props — he cut his engines off momentarily and tried to drift across the line. He worried that if he motored across it he might kill his engines sending him adrift in tide and wind, or suck the smaller boat underwater. With the strong outgoing tide and stiff north wind, if he lost power his charter would be on the rocks or sink.
