Durham College to introduce new program
DURHAM -- Durham College will offer a unique agricultural program as of September 2012.
The college's board of governors approved a new program, artisan agriculture, at its last meeting of the semester on June 8. Part of the school of science and engineering technology, the program will take students four semesters to complete.
Artisan agriculture describes innovative practices of agriculture and farm production that are geared toward the urban lifestyle. It's designed to be compatible in and around large cities and the end result is to transform locally-grown crop products into upscale specialty foods.
Most of the products will be directly marketed to consumers, chefs or specialty food stores. This type of agriculture focuses on smaller scale farming and usually utilizes manual labour and lacks toxic chemicals and large machinery.
"The principle focus of artisan, urban and value-added agriculture is to produce high quality food products in niche markets for consumers willing to pay premium prices," said Vidal Chavannes, Durham College manager of program development and quality.
The program will include several courses involving innovative niche processing of quality products and students will work with local food producers to develop and test new products for the specialty market.
Durham College hopes to enroll 10,000 domestic students by 2015 through new program development. Since artisan agriculture is a unique program, school staff believes it will draw students from across the province, specifically the Greater Toronto Area.

I have a full time job and I am looking to go back to school (haven’t been since high school) at age 25. I absolutely have to workfull time so I will be taking night and online courses.
I am currently looking at the Business-Marketing Diploma at both Seneca and Durham College. My question is, does the school reputation matter when it comes to diplomas or only higher degrees and more specifically university’ I live in Oshawa, so Durham College would be a lot more convenient for me and allow me more free time. However if Seneca is a better name and would be looked at in a better light then I would be willing to go there.
So I live in Oshawa, but work in Markham but don’t drive myself in. If I were to go to Seneca, I would have to drive myself in to work those days, which would cost gas. I finish work at 4, so if class was at 6:30 I would have time I need to kill. I would also probably be spending money on dinner. If I were to go to Durham, I could get a ride into work still as I do now and the time between work and school can be spent at home and I can eat there as well. I’m completely out of the loop on if school name matters at the diploma level, but if it does I am willing to look into Seneca. Seneca also seems to have more options for days and times of classes.
Last question, for someone returning to school part-time, how many courses would you take per semester while working M-F 7am – 4 pm’ I am willing to take both online and in class courses.
