1969: Baymeadows Golf Club opens.

August 2004: Residents who live along Baymeadows Golf Club are told the course is being sold to builder D.R. Horton who plans 1,400 homes and condominiums on the property. Residents fight the project.

January 2005: Jacksonville City Council approves Horton's traffic plan, giving the project the green light. Mayor John Peyton vetoes it.

February 2005: D.R. Horton finalizes its purchase, closes the course and files a lawsuit claiming Peyton's veto was invalid.

October 2005: Circuit Judge Hugh Carithers rules against D.R. Horton and calls City Council's approval of the project "completely unlawful."

June 2007: First District Court of Appeal upholds Peyton's veto.

The Baymeadows golf course had lain fallow for six years now. It's been mowed, but weeds and sand have taken over where neatly maintained fairways and greens once stood.

Now a different game is taking its place. An 18-hole disc golf course has opened there where the players throw discs (think Frisbees) into baskets rather than hit balls into holes.

It's pretty informal stuff. There are no tee times, no electric carts, no dress code.

Dan Berman built the course. Although he's had other ventures, from used car lots to a shuttle service, Berman keeps going back to disc golf.

He built the Fore Palms disc course up at the Ed Austin Regional Park in Arlington. He plans to charge $3 a day to play the Baymeadows course (Fore Palms is free), and he's going to set up a concession stand to sell drinks, burgers and discs. And he's looking for sponsors to help pay his $1,000 a month rent.

Eventually, he said, he wants to reopen the driving range for traditional golfers. That was shut down with the course back in 2005. But Berman said he's going to need about $40,000 to get that going. The building is long gone.

He received permission to do all this from the owners, builder D.R. Horton, which has been at the center of the heated battle over those 147 acres on Baymeadows Road.

The course was built in 1969 and the land around it sold as golf course property. After the homes were developed, the course went through several hands until Fore Golf Partners announced in 2004 that it was selling the property to D.R. Horton, the nation's largest home builder.
