The Story Of When All Crayons Were Toxic

Did these people cracking unfunny jokes about 'warnings on Big Mac sandwiches' wreck their nervous systems by eating toxic Crayola crayons growing up? (See how I didn't say they 'ate paint chips' or 'lived under power lines' as kids. Also unoriginal, as those two were in the movie Tommy Boy . Easy, cheap belly laughs, folks.) It was a different ballgame being played back in the 80's. This was especially the case for Crayola Corporation. You'll be surprised to learn that Crayola only made two colors prior to 1983. Those colors were yellow and green. This is why their familiar box is colored the way it is nowadays. The 80's quickly established itself as the decade fueled by cocaine, neon, and raising he!l, so Crayola capitalized on this and expanded their two colors by introducing three brand new colors to reflect the fast paced decade: white, orange, and red. Now crayon scribblers in all walks of life could draw more accurate pictures of the things they enjoyed most. The crayon maker rested in its laurels after a job well done. However the case, Crayola would soon learn that these colors were not enough and needed to expand their touchstone five colors to OTHER colors. Crayola faced this harsh realization, not from the disparaging notes tied to concrete blocks presented to them in full effect by hairy knuckled public demand in their US markets, but through their competition. In other words, Crayola was the unwilling participant in a sea change among branded consumer package goods that contained various colored contents. You see, it was the summer of 1986 and M&M candies and Starburst fruit chews threw their hats into the ring for the 'color race.' Those guys were in the same boat as Crayola and also had the same 5 colors. Who was going to come up with the next color and rake in all of the money? The public was on the edge of their seats to find out. The problem was, none of the three companies could come up with a new color. They were all coked out in their Members Only jackets to figure it out. To put it lightly, the mid to late 80's was a complete blow snuffing bloodsport between these companies trying to outdo each other. It appeared Crayola, in a three-way tie with M&Ms and Starburst, was fighting a losing battle. Although all companies had the same five colors (yellow, green, white, orange, and red), Crayola crayons were toxic.
